THE LOCOMOTIVES:  Hillcrest had many over the years owning four steam locomotives.  No.1: A small 25 ton Shay (now at the Forest Museum in Duncan).  No.9: A 50 ton Climax (now restored at the Forest Museum in Duncan) No.10: A 70 ton Climax (now at Elbe, Washington and operating in the summer on Mount Rainier Scenic Railroad)  No.11: A 90 ton Shay (preserved at Fort Steele, near Cranbrook, B.C.) 

 

The 10 Spot at Hillcrest mill, George Grant was the engineer for over 30 years.  When George retired Harry Wright became the engineer until Hillcrest closed in 1968. photo on the right is the 10 Spot crossing a trestle

Restored 9 Spot at the Forest Discovery Centre Museum in Duncan BC

25 ton shay at the Discovery Centre Museum in Duncan BC.  Fully operational for tours around the whole museum complex.

Both the 9 Spot and 10 Spot at the Hillcrest Mill Mesachie Lake.

A very early photo of the 10 Spot at Sahtlam mill when it was used exclusively for hauling ligs from the woods to the mill.

 

Bill Crawford was fireman on No. 2. It was changed to No. 9 because Western Forest Industries had a No. 9 already

Here are some photos sent to me by Frederick Johnson taken as a working locomotive in 1968 shortly before Hillcrest closed.  The engineer was Harry Wright.
